The Great Gift of Breyer Horses

October 31st, 2009

A parent wants to be present as their child grows. They try to be there for playtime and help with their child’s imagination as much as possible. But at some point, the child was want lifelike horse toys to play with instead of pretending to ride the parents around the living room, pretending mommy or daddy is a horse. Children become more aware of details as they grow. A little boy or girl will notice that their Technicolor stuffed horse doesn’t look like the horses they’ve seen at the state fair or on television. So children want more detailed toys to match the world they are beginning to realize.

That is why Breyer Horses are such great gifts for children. The horses that Breyer makes are detailed but not hazardous for young kids. They are safe toys that encourage imagination, but also have the detail to help educate children on the anatomy of animals. Instead of looking at rocking horses or stuffed animals for the anatomy of a horse, children get scaled, lifelike toys from Breyer. Seeing a toy they trust more as realistic, a child can connect to the toy more.
It may seem daunting at times to try and find a toy that your son or daughter may want. It seems like children’s likes and dislikes can change daily. However, sometimes simplicity is a good thing. Breyr toys are great because they show lifelike versions of a child’s favorite horse breeds, but the toys also encourage imagination still because they do not come with convoluted play areas for the figurines. This means that the child is more inclined to expand the areas in which to play with the toy, both inside and outside. All it relies on is the child’s imagination. Of course, it isn’t always to find the exact breed of horse you want. But Retired Breyer Horses are easily located online or at garage sales, as long as you take the time to look.

So the next time you are looking for a toy, remember the brand name Breyer.

How To Plant The Best Lawn

October 30th, 2009

Choosing the right kind of grass seed for the area that you live will save you a lot of trouble, especially when it comes to care and maintenance.

When picking out your grass seed you need to think about the climatic conditions of your area. Then there is the type of soil that you wish to plant your lawn in. These are the things that will have an impact on how your lawn will grow. You need to be able to regulate the water, sun and shade.

You might also be interested in any one of the following: pennington grass seed review best grass seed ratings top grass seed

Before planting your lawn you need to clear the ground that you want to plant your loan on. There must be nothing capable of growing on its own after the ground has been cleared. This is so that your lawn is not choked by weeds or blade grass as it grows. If the ground is cleared thoroughly then you will spend little time looking after it once it has grown. You will know that once it has sprouted you just water and trim it that’s all.

The reason for this is that after your lawn has grown weeds have little chance of growing at the same time. If you live in a dry and hot climate your best options are Buffalo grass, Centipede or Bermuda grass. In the areas that relatively cooler and generally wet Blue grass and Rye grass is recommended. It is only when a lawn is still small that it requires lots of care and maintenance after it has sprouted the rest is routine.

When you go and purchase your seeds, make sure you read the label that is attached to the packet or the instructions that are printed on it. Normally this should have information on the type of grass that it is and the conditions that it will adapt well to.

Brett Manning - Singing Success

October 29th, 2009

So you’d love to sing like a star but have never pursued your singing dreams because you can’t afford the high cost of professional singing lessons. Are there any other affordable options available? Is your desire to be a singer another dead-end dream or is there a way to realistically learn to sing like a star without the ongoing costs of private voice training? The good news is that with the right tools, you can become a great singer by learning to sing from the comfort of home. Here are a few options you might want to explore:

Your best option would be to check out Brett Manning Singing Success vocal coaching program. Singing Success is the Ferrari of home study singing lessons and consists of 12 quality audio CDs, 1 DVD and 1 informational booklet. Believe me when I tell you this is the most desired and highly acclaimed singing course available anywhere.

You wouldn’t believe how many incredible testimonials Singing Success with Brett Manning has received over the last few years, and it’s the preferred singing course of more Grammy song contest winners than any other learn to sing program. The before and after recordings on their website have to heard to be believed. The Grammy award winning country singer Keith Urban swears by the vocal warm up exercises.

I recommend you check out the video testimonial from lead singer Hayley Williams and learn more about these professional singing lessons by reading this Singing Success review Admittedly it’s not the cheapest singing course on the market, but in terms of quality it’s unbeatable and best of all it comes with a 6 month money back guarantee!

A few other options include doing a search in YouTube for learn to sing videos, but I’ve found the quality of the videos and training to be inconsistent and unreliable. My preferred website for online video singing lessons is eHow.com. You’ll find some good quality videos there. These are great for learning some basic singing skills and techniques but at some stage you will need to invest in a more in-depth and sequential program like Singing Success if you’re serious about learning to sing well and with minimum effort.

All the best with it and good luck!

Longarm Quilting Machines

October 25th, 2009

You may be asking yourself what is a longarm quilting service?  Well, it is a function that someone provides to you with a special machine that does the tough finishing of your special, maybe keepsake, quilt.  If you have such a quilt that you have put many hours and much love into, then you want to make sure that the complete edges are done correctly, perfectly and without defects.

Since you have found my site, I am so grateful that you are here.  When I first started making my keepsake quilts for my special friends, I never quite seemed to get the binding on right.  Or something else just wasn’t right.  I had no idea that something was out there and someone that owned that machine could help me get the exact perfect finishes I was looking for.  That’s when I started my serches and ended up writing this blog for you so you wouldn’t miss something that is superb.

If you would like to go here and find a longarm quilting service, I’m sure you will be pleasantly surprised by all of the services they can provide to you, including connecting binding edges on a quilt.I am so gratified for using the long arm quilting machine service for all of my designer quilts, I’ll never change.

There was a period where I thought about getting one of the longarm quilting machines.  After doing my research on them, I decided that using a service is much more economical for me.If you were going to buy one, make sure you know that they cost an arm and a leg!  Since people in the past relied on quilting bees to produce finished quilts, I needed to find some other method because buying that machine was not an option for me.

At the time when I had finished six quilt tops that I had put a lot of love and time into and stuck with a way to get them finished quickly, was the time I found “longarm quilting service”.Magical milestones seemed to be around every other day!  Let alone, Christmas.  So I found four quilting services, called them, asked them questions and voila! So I had the perfect quick fix.

I hope you don’t spend as much time as I did trying to find the right quilting service.  This is the reason I have made this blog, so you won’t waste your precious time.

One thing that I have just finished doing, which was a first for me, is I sent a design to my quilting service.  She is making a quilt top from my design on her longarm quilters.  I sent the design, which is unique only to my family, and it will be ready for pick up before my husband’s birthday!  I am so excited about it!  My quilting service is going to do the whole thing, but I made the design!  I never could have made a quilt like that doing it the old fashioned way.  That’s not to say I have given up making homemade, hand quilting services of my own.Nope, never-ever, I adore it excessively.

The best thing about finding my longarm quilting service is that now I have so many more options to add to my hobby.I am going to assemble another one that will not be a knock off of anything I’ve ever done before.

Scrapbooking Layout - Other Layouts for your Scrapbook

October 23rd, 2009

To spice up your scrapbook, you may want to try a different type of scrapbooking layout. While there are many simple layouts to choose from, there are those unusual layouts that can really give your memories life and push your creativity into a new level. A layout gives flavor to a theme and knowing both can make scrapbook shopping a piece of cake. Here are a few scrapbooking ideas for your layouts.

Wood

Wood doesn’t necessarily mean the use of regular wood chunks for your scrapbooking layout. Using Popsicle sticks or even bamboo can be used for your background. Bamboo is a good scrapbooking material, as it can be put together to create Chinese figures or other exotic patterns. This can be used as background for photos or even as the outer cover of the scrapbook. If with carpentry experience, using plywood or small pieces of wood can be made into scrapbook outlines. Remains from wood work can be used as embellishments for your scrapbook.

Woven

For lovers of knitting and gifted with the talent of yarn and fabric, using a woven scrapbooking layout will be convenient. Using different types of materials like yarn and straw can give your scrapbook the handicraft look. While you can use weaving to spice up the background of the pages of your scrapbook, you’ll also be able to use woven fabric or even knitted crafts to cover up your scrapbook. Highlight weaved materials with embellishments like fabric flowers, beads and buttons.

Use different scrapbooking supplies and materials, learn new tips and make extraordinary layouts. With much creativity and a wide imagination, you can make a unique and memorable scrapbook for your family. If you want to save up money on scrapbooking, use home supplies as embellishments and just highlight with simple scrapbooking tools.

How the Tradition of Mailing Christmas Cards Started

October 22nd, 2009

In 1843, Sir Henry Cole of England started the practice of sending Christmas cards.

As the story goes, Sir Henry Cole had too many clients to hand compose Christmas greetings to, so, he appointed artist John Calcott Horsley to create a card onto which he had imprinted “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You”.  He typeset one thousand cards.  Of those, twelve remain today. Before long, delivering Christmas cards became a standard formality all over the world.

In the late ninteenth century and early 20th century, Christmas cards designed  by Kate Greenaway, the Victorian childrens writer and illustrator, were popular.  She often made cards with different fabrics and fringe.    Some were even elaborate pop-ups featuring skaters and tiny mangers.

In the US, Christmas cards were imported and something of a luxury until, in 1875, a German immigrant, Louis Prang, began to print them in Boston.BeforeUntil then, Christmas cards were brought into the country from England.Sadly, Prang was forced out of business in the 1890’s when foreign manufacturers produced lower priced cards.  Even so, Prang is known as the forefather of the American Christmas card.

Advancements in production of card making happened during WWI with fierce competition amongst card publishers.

During the Great Depression, the use of color lithography put new life into the card industry.

In the 1950s, the studio card made its debut. Studio cards introduced humor as a staple in the greeting card industry.

In the 1990’s, the electronic card, or e-card, was introduced.

In present day, there are a wide range of Christmas cards available. From traditional scenes and religious Christmas cards to jokes, there is a card out there to put anyone in the holiday spirit.   In fact, the industry has evolved so much that there is a card for virtually any event, or “non-event.”  Still, Christmas remains the highest ranking of the card-selling holidays.

For some people, Christmas cards are a way to keep in touch in an otherwise hectic life; a way to say, “Hi, I’m still here!”   The Christmas card has made many changes since its introduction in the 19th century, but the sentiment behind it is always the same:  “Merry Christmas!”

How to Make a School Scrapbooking Border

October 21st, 2009

If you want to create a scrapbook album to commemorate a specific school year, you may be wondering what to use for a school scrapbooking border. Sure, most people use those block letters or school buses and these work just fine but if you want to be creative you can come up with so many other scrapbooking paper crafts and things to use to help you celebrate the school year.

For example, think specifically of that child. What kinds of activities do they like to do during the school year or what is their favorite academic subject? You can be flexible with disney scrapbook layouts. If they like science then use science-related objects as a school scrapbooking border. This could include atoms and molecules or beakers. You can even try equations. If they like to read or do creative writing then books with children’s titles might work well. If they are really good at music, then of use musical notes or die cuts of their favorite instrument as part of a school page border. Kids into sports might inspire you to use sports items as a school scrapbooking border. Bats, balls, racquets, and even sports shoes can make great items!

Another creative idea for a school scrapbooking border is to use different scrapbooking poems quotes and phrases in different fonts and typestyles and use those as a border. There are many phrases and sayings you can use, but you many want to ask your children for ideas. Obviously the phrases that kids use every day can change constantly so don’t assume you know “what the kids are saying” today- ask your child! Getting your children involved in designing a school scrapbooking border can also be a fun and challenging project for the both of you to do together.

Remember too that you don’t even need to use school-related items for a school scrapbooking border. Sometimes you can just use a good color scheme like primary colors for elementary school chlidren or the school colors of your kids’ school for older high school students. If you carry the same color scheme throughout your album pages, you can tie everything together and have a terrific looking finished product. You might also try using small die cuts to attach together on your page layout as a school scrapbooking border rather than just something you write or draw on the page. This could be mini books, apple shapes or small brick school houses that you decorate and then attach to the page as a border.

Money-Saving Ways to Make Your Home Look Gorgeous

October 20th, 2009

Bearing in mind the present financial situation, many homeowners have decided not to rejuvenate their dated home because it’s too costly.  If you’re in that same situation, you can rest easy that you can give your house an overhaul with some key improvements and not having to spend an arm and a leg in the process.

Stretching Your Remodeling Dollar

Start with fundamentals when mulling over a remodel.  Start from the top of the room and work your way down. This is the first step in your renovation. If you have a “popcorn” ceiling, consider either repainting it a crisp, white color or hiring someone to resurface and retexurize it with a even pattern. Don’t forget to apply a thick primer before your paint coat!  Next, look at the walls and select neutral tones that will compliment with light and earthy tones and will go with any designs and decorations. Fix any holes and marks in your walls and doors so your home looks fresh and refinished. Next, continue with the floor areas: are the floors and baseboards in good condition?  If they are, re-paint the baseboards a nice white color to give the home a new and updated look. If you plan to remove and replace the floors, consider porcelain tiles, because they are affordable per square foot and stay looking new much longer than carpet does.  If you will be installing carpeting, choose a compact pile that is somewhere between brown and beige so that marks from food and drinks won’t show much and the carpet will resist crushing for a long time.

Save Money and Do It Yourself

Renewing your kitchen and bathrooms are the best investments you can put into your living quarters. If the cabinetry is in good repair, consider either restaining the existing cabinets or replacing them.  If you will be re-facing them, get a good cordless drill and take off the hardware from the cabinet doors to release them.  If needed,  you can purchase new cabinet facing from your local hardware store. To save even more, use the cabinets you have and refinish them. Again, detach the doors from the cabinets and then apply a paint stripper to the existing finish and scrape it off with a special scraper made from hard plastic just for this purpose. Once all trace of the old finish has been removed, sand the cabinets the beginning time with a belt sander using medium-grade sandpaper. A last sanding should be performed last with a fine-grit sandpaper after that. Remove all of the wood dust and then spread a wood conditioner to the cabinets. Finally, stain or paint the wood and finish it with 2-3 clear coats to protect the finished product from exposure to moisture.

How to Make an Impact Through Design

Upgrading your decorative items is an uncomplicated, but significant way to make your home looking sharp. There are great deals at estate sales, second-hand shops, or on the Web which will save money.  For even bigger savings, make furniture pieces by hand. You can make a unique headboard, for example, with nothing more than two over-sized splindles or posts of wood, a wood lathe (you can rent this from someone), and a large rectangle of plywood.  Cover the wood in the center area with some batting, fabric, and unique upholstery tacks for a new headboard that is truly stunning!

Maybe you have just purchased a fixer-upper or are looking for ways to upgrade your existing home with as little cost as possible. Either way, these helpful hints for getting the best-looking house will help your living quarters look like new without spending a ton of dough in the process.

Two Family Halloween Crafts

October 18th, 2009

If you don’t have a lot of time to spend with your kids making complicated Halloween craft projects but would like to do something for the holiday, not to worry. The Internet is a great source of free Halloween images that can be used to create quick and easy crafts. For example, craft projects made from vintage Halloween postcards found on the Internet are simple to make, because vintage images are both versatile and very effective at conveying a Halloween feel. You can find a little something for everyone, because vintage Halloween cards run the gamut from sweet to scary. Vintage images can also be downloaded and used without fear of copyright infringement. That’s a terrific bonus, because you don’t have to worry about using other people’s art illegally.

Doing a fast Web search for “vintage Halloween” will give you a huge selection of free vintage images from which many fun crafts projects can be made. And, of course, if you don’t like vintage, contemporary Halloween clip art can also produce great craft projects.

Here are some examples of simple Halloween projects virtually anyone can make by using free electronic images:

Handmade Halloween Postcards
When you’ve downloaded the Halloween image you’d like to use, paste it into a Word, PowerPoint or OneNote document. You can size the card using the software’s settings. Place the image on one half of the card, so it can be folded in half after it’s printed. Print the card on card stock as heavy as your printer will allow, fold it and use a little glitter glue to make it sparkle. You might also want to make your own envelopes or just buy two-for-a-dollar card and envelope sets at the dollar store and then recycle the cards.

Spooky Halloween Wreath Decoration
Making a Halloween wreath is easy. Here are the supplies you’ll need to have on-hand:

  • 1 plain Styrofoam wreath ring (your choice as far as size)
  • Scissors
  • Short straight pins
  • Ribbon or a plastic or metal door-hanger
  • These clip arts or vintage Halloween cards of your choice (between two and four inches long), printed and cut along the outlines
  • Halloween scrapbook paper (optional)

Download the art you want to use to your hard drive. Then, print enough clip art images to fit around the wreath and cut them out with scissors or a craft knife. You can also vary the look by using Halloween scrapbooking paper cut into bat or leaf shapes. Once all the pieces are cut, position them in a balanced way around the Styrofoam wreath and affix them with the straight pins. Be prepared to adjust the positioning of the pieces a bit to get everything to look balanced. The straight pins should make it easy to reposition the elements. (Just make sure to watch the little ones around the straight pins!) When you’re done, use a ribbon or door hanger to hang it.

I hope you enjoy making these simple and fun Halloween crafts and that you have a fun holiday!

Why the Cricut Expression Machine is for More Than Scrapbooking!

October 17th, 2009

While it might be a bit more expensive than some die cut machines you’ve seen for scrapbooking, the Cricut Expression Machine is a worthwhile investment for scrappers as well as teachers, parents, and those who homeschool their children.  If your looking for additional scrapbooking paper crafts, this machine might be just what your scrapbooking projects need.

The Cricut Expression Machine is larger than most die cut machines so it needs to stay on a work table or in a media room.It is not meant to be portable or to be moved from room to room.  However this larger size means that it can accommodate not just 12×12 pages but sizes of mats up to 12×24.Because of this, you can get twice the size of die cuts from this machine!  The Cricut machines all use the same cartridges and same blades, so you can use any Cricut cartridge for the Cricut Expression Machine.  You also don’t need a computer for this machine; you make your selections right there on the LCD screen which also shows you exactly what you’ll be cutting and what size so there are no mistakes.

This means that the Cricut Expression Machine is perfect for scrapbooking as well as for making banners, classroom decorations, and many other teaching tools.  Imagine the party planning you can do with this machine or how you can use its cartridges to create teaching aids for your homeschooled children.Scrapbookers appreciate the larger-sized die cuts that the Cricut Expression Machine creates, and by cutting individual page elements and layering them you can really enhance your scrapbooking page layouts.

Remember too that with the Cricut Expression Machine you can purchase many different cartridges from Cricut.  They have licensed cartridges meaning characters from Disney, Sesame Street, and so on, and literally dozens of font designs as well.  You can also purchase shape cartridges for your Cricut Expression Machine so you can cut out simple shapes and those you may use for a variety of reasons; decorate or stamp them before adding them to your scrapbooks for even more visual interest.

Don’t forget the amazing Cricut Design Studio software. This software enables you to attach your computer to your Cricut Expression machine.  It’s a must-have for every Cricut user.  With an on-screen cutting mat, you’ll be making your own creations in no time. This machine also features a search function that allows you to quickly and easily find any image in the Cricut cartridge library, and this feature alone makes the software a great way to get the most from your Cricut machine. You definitely want to check out cricut design studio files.

You’ll be amazed at all you can do with the Cricut Expression machine. So if you can afford the investment, it’s well worth the money and will make a great addition to your online scrapbooking supplies.  Of course you’ll also need the room for it but those who’ve purchased it say that it’s well worth what they’ve spent for it.  Whether it’s for parties, school projects, or scrapbooks, it’s a great machine!
