What do people mean when they say Baseball Is America’s Pastime?

Doesn’t it mean that people would always watch it to pass the time? Becuase everyone in my neighborhood keeps saying it means it was what people did in the past, and that it was really big in the past, so it is a PAST time. Which is it?
yeah, football and basketball are more popular.

And I am not making this up, but NASCAR is also more popular. (It is the 2nd most watched sport in America, right next to NFL football)

but today in my art class, i overheard a kid saying baseball isn’t a sport, it’s a pastime.
i was gonna deny that, but now i keep hearing america’s favorite pastime in my head when i think of baseball..
so now i’m all confused.
