Create A Banner

September 19th, 2009

At last a decent video that actually shows you what to do

Whenever I am having an event, particularly a party for the kids, I like to create a banner.  It is fun to stretch out a large sheet of butcher block paper, and have everybody work on it together with pens, pencils, paints, stencils, and glitter to form a banner which will show everybody where the major event is.  I first got the concept from going to my five year old’s preschool open house, where all the children created banners about who they may be.

I did not get to watch my kid make a banner, but I could tell that he had had tons of fun doing it!  His banner showed are house, his folks and small sister, his best friend, his dog, and his favourite hobbies.  There he was, curled up in an imaginatively drawn chair, in my lap, sharing a picture book.  It actually touched my heart and made me need to make a banner with him, where we could have an experience bonding and sharing ideas about our life, so on the week before his very next birthday, I came back home with some butcher block paper, and we got to work.

Of course, being concerned in net commerce, banners are more than the way I bond with my baby.  Every time I start a new e-business, I must make a banner for my internet site.  There are a variety of different software options for doing this, but truly, if you know your way around the computer, and already have web-design software, there is no need to buy special banner making software.  You can create a banner out of any photographs, animated or otherwise, and good old Photoshop, combined with a search engine and a true scanner has always worked sufficiently well for me.

It’s stupid to trouble to make a banner with animated gifs and flashing colors, as it will just look upsetting and grating to somebody, and they will likely close it outright.  The best banners have a more subdued, classy appearance to them, and try to earn the sympathy of the spectator, rather than clobbering them over the head and trying to require them to buy what your selling.  Before I create a banner, I mostly think about my target audience and what kind of images they are most sure to appreciate.  Then I can create a banner that will appeal to them and their tastes.
